Crazy Cool: Sand Art

Image via Wikipedia

You guys might already know that StumbleUpon is one of my favorite things about the internet.  I “stumble” all the time, finding new music, art, and recipes.  A few days ago, I came across Kseniya Simonova, a brilliant sand artist from the Ukraine.  Winner of television talent show “Ukraine’s Got Talent,” this 26 year-old uses her fingers and a mix of volcanic sand and salt to tell stories over a lighted canvas.

She only started painting with sand three years ago, when her husband suggested it after the economic downturn left them unemployed.  She cared for their son during the day, and practiced with sand from 10pm until early morning.

Most of the work Kseniya creates tells an emotional tale, but many, like the video below, show the evolution of a place or people.  Check out Kseniya Simonova’s interpretation of the circus:

Neat-o!  Her back must be killing after standing for hours on end painting.  You can check out more of Kseniya’s videos on her YT channel.

What do you think?  Have you seen Kseniya Simonova’s sand art before?  Thanks for stopping by! xx

I Want This: DIY Hanging Bed

Hanging Bed by Life at Fire Lake Camp via More Design Please

When I was a tween back in the day (so far back there was no such word as ‘tween,’ I think) I was obsessed with hammocks.  I tried several times to fashion one out of sheets while holed up in my room.  It never worked.  I fell on my ass more than once.

Maybe that’s why I’m so crazy about this hanging bed- it’s got all the carefree swing of a hammock without that awkward feeling that you’re about to tumble onto the floor.  This is a hammock for grown-ups or something.  I dunno.  But I love it.  When I have a deck (or a sweet tree house) this is the first thing going up in there!

Isn’t this just the cutest?  I would love to give this project a shot one day- it really doesn’t look that hard.  What do you think of this DIY project?  Have a great day! xx

I Grossly Overpaid For My Glasses

Warby Parker Home Try On

. . . and I’m real mad about it!  Well, I really like my ‘specs, so maybe not that mad. They’re the one “couture” accessory I own, so they were worth the splurge!

However, I recently found a couple of websites that offer some really cute eyeglasses for c-h-e-a-p.  Today, I’ll feature my favorite site so far.

I was watching E! a few weeks back and they did a feature on this store called Warby Parker.  This online retailer specializes in classic shapes at an affordable price.  All of their eyewear retails for $95, including your prescription lenses (WHAAAA?!). What’s more, for every pair you buy, WP will donate a pair to someone in need.

They’ve also gotten around the pesky ‘I-bought-it-online-and-found-out-it-sucked-take-it-back” problem by offering a trial kit containing 5 pairs of glasses.  You can try the glasses out for five days- free of charge- and place an order for the frames you want.

They’ve also got a cool virtual try-on tool that I spent way too much time fooling around with.  You can change the color, size, and angle to find which Warby Parker frames seem like the best fit.

I hadn't quite gotten the hang of it yet. Note the crooked glasses!

This color is called "Whiskey Tortoise." I wish that were a real animal.

Right now I only need my glasses for reading.  Even though I read a lot, I’m not really in the market for a new pair.  So, I’ll pass on this information to you in the hopes that it saves you from ridonkulous prices in the future.

Have you tried Warby Parker eyewear?  Thumbs up or thumbs down?  What are some of your favorite online retailers?  Tell me in the comments!  Have a great day, everyone! xx

Happy Easter!

I’m in Hawaii for this lovely Easter holiday, so this post is late for all you East Coasters!  Ah well, it’s the thought that counts.  I’ve had a lovely day painting eggs and gorging at a beach- side brunch with my family.  Hope your Easter was just as lovely- whether you celebrate Easter or not.

I’m super proud of these Safari-themed Easter eggs because I have no artistic ability whatsoever.  Woo hoo!
Hope you all had a wonderful holiday with friends and family!  xx

Happy Chinese New Year!

Gung Hay Fat Choy!  Today is the first day of the new lunar year, according to the Chinese calendar.  I’m a big lover of astrology and the Chinese zodiac because they are really fun and interesting- regardless of how much stock you put in them!  According to a recent poll, though, about 30% of Americans believe in astrology, so I guess a lot of you do put some stock in the stars.

If you’re unaware, today marks the start of the Year of the Rabbit, a peaceful year with a focus on family and home.  Diplomacy and security are the words to remember this year as you deal with others.  This is the year to pinch pennies and learn to live with less, because next year (The Year of the Dragon) should be somewhat chaotic.

For those born in the year of the rabbit, this should be an especially lucky year for you (Rabbit people are lucky anyway).  I know that both times it was my zodiac year, I had some of the best luck ever!

One of the best things about Chinese New Year is the massive celebrating that happens.  When I was a kid back home in Hawaii, this was one of my favorite times of year.  I would stuff my face with dumplings, light firecrackers until I couldn’t hear my own thoughts, and dance along while watching the Dragon Dances in the streets.  If it was a very lucky year for me, I would get a couple of red envelopes with money in them, which I would immediately spend on candy.

I could reminisce for hours, but I won’t.  I’m going to try and find a CNY party near me and hang out by the dumplings!  Have a great day everyone, and here’s to a new year!

Do you have a CNY story?  Share it in the comments!  What are you hoping for in the year of the rabbit?  Let me know- I love to hear from you guys!  xoxo

I Went to the Circus!

Oh Lord!  It’s been forever since I’ve posted, but I’ve had a good reason:  I’ve been ill with the plague.  While in and out of my feverish delusions I had only one thought:  “MUST BLOG!”  Okay, fine.  I really didn’t think about it at all.  What I did think was, “how many doses of NyQuil I can take without slipping into a coma?”  But that’s beside the point.  The point is:  I went to the circus!  Here’s the story:

"FULLY CHARGED!"

Last week Thursday (before the onset of my personal plague) a big group of Disney friends and I headed down to the new Amway Center to catch Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus.

I was really excited because it has been years since I’ve been to the circus, and I really wanted to see some elephants.  There were protesters outside while we waited to get in, which made me feel bad.

But then I got over it, because there were elephants!  Standing on tiny stools and walking trunk-to-tail!

There were some really cool animal acts, including a Spanish-speaking tiger, and gorgeous horses.  My favorite part, though, had to be the acrobats.  There was a thrilling high wire act that had me on the edge of my seat.  There was also the Fernandez Brothers, a pair from Mexico who perform on giant swinging pendulums.  It was really exciting.  Mostly because they kept messing up and we all thought they were gonna die:

Yeah, it was a mess.  Still fun, though.  I’m glad I went, and I think I’d take my kids if I had any!

Have a good week everyone! xoxo

This Is the Remix: Toy Story

Pogo's self portrait? Hmm. . .

Check out this remixx (two “x”s cause I’m cutting edge) by the clever Pogo.  He’s a young South African who has a knack for creating earworms using samples from popular movies.  This is one of his newer vids, a killer send up of Toy Story moments.

I recently came into a Special Edition Blu-Ray/DVD thingy of Toy Story 3, and I’m really stoked to watch it, but I’m kinda thinking my sis would like it for Christmas (SHH! don’t rat me out).  This will just have to tide me over until I can get my paws on another copy. . .

You can find all of Pogo’s remixes here on his YT account.  Have a great day and thanks for reading!
