According to Broadway World, the creators of South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone are penning a new musical comedy that pokes fun at Mormonsim. The music will be written by Avenue Q composer Robert Lopez, and Casey Nicholaw is set to choreograph. Previews of The Book of Mormon start February 24, 2011, but a cast has yet to be announced.
You might be wondering what Trey and Matt know about writing a musical. Actually, quite a bit. Do you remember their movie, South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut? Well the song from that movie, “Blame Canada.” was actually nominated for an Oscar for Best Song. Since it first aired, South Park has won four Emmys and a Peabody award.
And they’ve got a great team behind them on this. Robert Lopez is not only the composer of Avenue Q, but also a co-creator and lyricist. The musical won the 2004 Tony for Best Musical, Best Score, and even scored a Grammy for the cast album. Casey Nicholaw has been nominated for a Tony twice for her work on Monty Python’s Spamalot and The Drowsy Chaperone.
So, while I’m sure everyone will be offended, you’ve gotta admit that this show has a good shot of being pretty good. If it’s half as funny as the South Park episode, “All About the Mormons, ” we’ve got a winner on our hands. I’ll keep you posted on how the show’s coming along. In the meantime, remember this bad boy from the Mormon episode?Vodpod videos no longer available.
